A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Gilbert played high school basketball at Trinity Christian Academy, where he scored more than 1,773 points and grabbed 1,256 rebounds. He went on to play collegiately at Webber International University.

In 2025, Gilbert joined the Rangers after serving as the video coordinator for Syracuse University during the 2023–24 season. The Orange finished with a 24–8 record, ranked in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll, and reached the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament. The team also had a player selected in the WNBA Draft. Prior to his time at Syracuse, Gilbert was an assistant coach for the Long Island University women's basketball program during the 2022–23 season. Serving as co-defensive coordinator, he focused on post player development, scouting and recruiting. Under his guidance, the Sharks won four of their final five regular season games before falling in the first round of the Northeast Conference Tournament to eventual champion Sacred Heart. Gilbert also spent a season at Northwest Florida State College, helping head coach Bart Walker lead the Raiders to a 27–3 record. The team held the No. 1 national ranking for 12 consecutive weeks and captured the FCSAA State/NJCAA District championship with an 81–40 win over Indian River State College.

Education:

Gilbert earned a bachelor's degree in biological science from Florida State University in 2013 and a master's degree in secondary education from Grand Canyon University in 2017.
